xp users dont fear, support is here

It was a failure because it was too different from XP for people to be comfortable to make the change. I've been using Vista ultimate x64 on my laptop and my desktop, and it makes doing shit so much easier in the end than XP. When you compare the two side by side, vista is better (after SP1, however).
I agree in part with that last statement.....but there are still to many bugs for us(Clemson University) to install it on any lab machines. Until it proves to be beneficial upgrading, we will stick with xp until windows 7 is released.

The people that hate vista either don't know how to use it, or don't want to accept change. The only issue is compatibility, but as a whole, Vista is a far better OS than XP.

you know microsoft views it as a failure and is extending support for xp right? they will release windows 7 in 2010 to hopefully make up for vista's shortcomings

edit: and to be nice, vista is fine for the basic user. it is more demanding of your hardware making it slower, and has many issues with existing software and drivers which the more advanced user needs and uses
notice the edit....sry

I was trying to be nice, but here comes the xp/vista war once again....

LOL. I have no problem with Vista at all. I use it at work and on my laptop. I have had quite a few issues with the Vista business I use at work but they have been fairly minor. I have XP on my main desktop at home tho.

I find the "vista is a better OS then XP" statement a little far fetched tho.

Naturally, my friend, I agree. Purdue has yet to switch over for numerous reasons, but if you look at the track record for windows OS's, they eventually do switch. Remember how long it took to go from 2000 to XP? Same thing here.
And yes, I was talking about for the home user that Vista is better since that's what the thread is about. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I prefer XP. The thing I dislike about the direction MS is going is going with their new and upcoming OS's demand more hardware resources. You shouldn't have to have 2 gigs of ram to run an OS //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/mad.gif.c18f003ab0ef8a0d9c27ca78d77a6392.gif

I don't get it when people say 'Vista is so different from XP' WTF is so different, I have been using Windows since 3.0 and it has always been pretty straightforward providing you are not mentally handicapped.

I like Vista, had a few problems with video drivers for my system at first but nothing I have not had to deal with in XP over the years.

It is time to let go people, if you are too cheap or can't afford a newer PC that can run Vista then fine XP is great but that is not a reason to say Vista sucks.

Anyone use XP SP3? All the cool new features and looks of Vista but still has XP compatability and runs like XP in the background so its not such a ram *****. I think if they just re-released SP3 as Vista that would have been the most succesful because I love it.
I just installed XP3 on my work computer, but I don't notice a bit of difference...what else did you get? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

we cant upgrade at work either because of the allen bradley software we use with our plc controllers. i dual boot my personal so neither make much difference besides work.

With many business and individual PC users rejecting Windows Vista, Microsoft took an unprecedented step this week by promising support for Windows XP for a full 13 years. That is three years longer than it has allowed for previous Windows operating systems.

In a letter sent to customers this week, Bill Veghte, a Microsoft vice president, also seemed to confirm that Windows 7 will be released in 2010. That OS, Veghte wrote, will ship "approximately three years" after Vista became available in January 2007.

Avoiding Vista

Meantime, security patches and updates to Windows XP will be provided until April 2014, Veghte promised. In what could be considered an understatement, he wrote, "Our ongoing support for Windows XP is the result of our recognition that people keep their Windows-based PCs for many years."

Many large businesses have avoided upgrading to Windows Vista, which has been plagued with widely publicized problems, including incompatibilities with drivers for legacy hardware and applications. Upgrading to Vista could also be very expensive for enterprises that would need to upgrade older hardware. Many businesses and individuals have opted to buy Windows XP on new PCs.

While June 30 remains the cutoff date for selling Windows XP, retailers such as Dell are still selling preconfigured PCs with XP. And enterprises with volume licensing contracts will still be able to install XP even on new machines.

Downgrade Option

In addition, Microsoft has promoted a licensing loophole that allows new hardware buyers to purchase Windows Vista and then downgrade it to a previous version of Windows. Microsoft has cited such purchases as evidence of support for Vista, but many Web postings have disputed that.

"It's true that we will stop selling Windows XP as a retail packaged product and stop licensing it directly to major PC manufacturers," Veghte's letter says. "But customers who still need Windows XP will be able to get it."

Microsoft will also continue to sell a version of Windows XP to makers of low-cost computers through June 2010. Such machines as the Asus Eee PC are incapable of running Vista and the alternative would be for the makers to install open-source Linux as the operating system.
This is an "unprecedented" step ?
They've been advertising on their operating life cycle page since BEFORE VISTA WAS RELEASED that they would support XP until 2014 ...

It shouldn't come as a surprise considering the only people who are excited about any XP news are ill-informed retards, though. Nor should it come as a surprise coming from Yahoo News, who is pissed that Microsoft didn't swallow them up for their asking price and is now just luring their best employees away by offering them better contracts.

Nothing in this article is news //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif It's all information that's at least 6 months old, with most of it older than that ...
