xp users dont fear, support is here

Anyone use XP SP3? All the cool new features and looks of Vista but still has XP compatability and runs like XP in the background so its not such a ram *****. I think if they just re-released SP3 as Vista that would have been the most succesful because I love it.
Service Pack 3 is nothing more than a collection of security updates and some other security changes to the OS. If anything, it's caused more harm than good.
And where you pulled the "get all the features and looks of Vista" out of your ***, I'll never know.

they also added the compatibility of xp to server 2008 which is pointless for home users....

the only benefit I see to sp3 is if you are building a new machine, and want xp but don't want to download the 90 some odd updates from microsoft. SP3 has them all packed in one download

you know microsoft views it as a failure and is extending support for xp right? they will release windows 7 in 2010 to hopefully make up for vista's shortcomings

edit: and to be nice, vista is fine for the basic user. it is more demanding of your hardware making it slower, and has many issues with existing software and drivers which the more advanced user needs and uses
LOL ...
Microsoft doesn't view it as a failure, the press does (and, therefore, the sheep do). They're releasing Windows 7 in 2010 because ... Get this ... Microsoft wants to get back to a more regular product lifecycle of releasing a new OS every ~3 years //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wow.gif.23d729408e9177caa2a0ed6a2ba6588e.gif Which ... OMG ... they stated ... before Vista was released //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wow.gif.23d729408e9177caa2a0ed6a2ba6588e.gif

Many issues w/ software and drivers ? LOL ... Seriously ... This isn't Spring 2007 anymore ...

vista isnt bad if you have a computer that can run it properly it does however take some getting used to. i still run xp cause i dont like change.
very true. but if you have a computer than can run vista.. it'll run xp pro / xp lite QUIIIIIIIIIICK as balls.

I prefer XP. The thing I dislike about the direction MS is going is going with their new and upcoming OS's demand more hardware resources. You shouldn't have to have 2 gigs of ram to run an OS //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/mad.gif.c18f003ab0ef8a0d9c27ca78d77a6392.gif
2 GB of RAM is $20 ... We're not talking an ultra-high-end top-of-the-line PC here ...

where can you get 2gb of ram for 20 bucks? & x2.
I just picked some up by pricematching @ NCIX this weekend for $20.xx + shipping ...
Bufallo 1 x 2 GB PC2-5300 DIMM

It doesn't appear to be on sale anymore, though //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif Up to $35 ... Still not very expensive, though ...

LOL ...
Many issues w/ software and drivers ? LOL ... Use the OS, n00b ... Seriously ... This isn't Spring 2007 anymore ...
What do you mean by this? we have drivers for printing on campus that will not work with vista and hp has not written drivers to work with it(also a problem with office 07)

Specialty software which is required by different departments around campus is not compatible. Nobody was prepared for the release of vista!

I still say for home use ok...but not for me. vista is taxing on the hardware, and xp is much faster on the same machine.

word.
is it worth a shit?
Works fine ... I use Bufallo RAM in all my cheap builds, never had an issue ... They usually use Micron D9 ICs, oddly enough ... Just keep in mind that, despite the high quality ICs, the PCB is shit, so even w/ RAM sinks, they still don't take to overclocking very well, IME ...
The system I built was:

Coolermaster RC-330

Seasonic SS-350ET

AMD Athlon X2 4850e

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 PWM

Gigabyte GA-MA78G-DS3H

2 x 2 GB Bufallo PC2-5300

Seagate 7200.11 500 GB

Lite-On LH-20A1S

Windows Vista Home Premium

Runs fast and quiet. Way better than anything I sell at work for a similar price (they have faster CPUs and decent cases, but everything else sucks).

Businesses and schools have hardware that is old as shit ... Nothing new here ...
It usually takes several years before large businesses or schools roll out a new OS. My university was still running Windows 98 in 2003; is that an indication that 98 is better than XP ? No ...

we went to xp the following year:fyi: and it is was being discussed to go to vista. however after extensive testing it has been ruled stupid

The key word being USUALLY ...
I seriously doubt you are going to be any better off w/ Windows 7, though. It's not like MS is going to just throw legacy support for 20-year-old hardware back in. They're now requiring that hardware manufacturers must pass certification for both Windows Vista and Windows 7 in order to receive certification for either, which will be great for the end-user (less hardware/driver issues when Windows 7 is released; at least for people using relatively new hardware).

hopefully by the time windows 7 is released we will have hardware from the 21st century:laugh:
