does anybody have any personal experience with either one of these? i read some online reviews and went to each website but they didnt help much..and also, if i buy an alpine HU which is XM-ready, will it only work with XM? or would i be able to use sirius with it?

Only XM will work.......if you dont listen to sports in your car then there is really no reason to go with Sirius because the major diff is Sirius has Hockey, Basketball, Football (no college) and XM only has Nascar. They have the same programming such as hip hop channels jazz country etc. etc. etc...........Me, i prefer XM but you can't go wrong with either one.

alright thanks man, i'm startin work at circuit city on sunday, but nowhere even close to the car section //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/uhoh.gif.c07307dd22ee7e63e22fc8e9c614d1fd.gif

I'm a Sirius Howard Stern fan //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif Just bought a Kenwood Excelon DDX-7015 that is Sirius ready. Plus I'm also a sports fan. Although I believe XM has Opie and Anthony?

I prefer sirius. Rented a car with XM and it would cut out when next to a tree. The only time I've had sirius cut out is when I'm stuck in traffic and happen to be under an overpass. XM is about $10/month and sirius is about $13/month. If you pay a year at a time with sirius they knock the price down to that of XM. Sirius is getting Howard Stern in 2006 and XM has/will be getting(not sure) Opie and Anthony. Other than that they're pretty much the same.

XM decks aren't XM ready only. Sirius teamed up with pretty much every company to make Sirius plugs for all the XM companies, not sure if they're doing it vice versa. The direct link XM plugs are out now (well some of em: Sony, Pioneer, and Kenwood). The Alpine XM tuner/plug combo actually has a pass-through so in theory you could use both services. XM has much better plug and play units, although Sirius is starting to catch up.

I personally prefer the programming on Sirius better as they have more rap/hiphop stations. Stern won't be on till about a year and a half from now, so it's not really a deciding factor, XM does have O and A right now which is supposedly pretty funny (even more extreme than Stern) although I haven't heard it yet.

NFL is nice on Sirius, but it's only 16 days out of the year. XM is picking up college sports (football and basketball) and has Nascar (2 stations, 1 with the radio stuff that the driver's and commentators actually hear).

XM is also adding the Starbucks channel thing (Hear Music), which is going to mean a lot of money for them, so invest in their stock if you can. Sirius has NPR but XM has Bob Edwards, the main reason why most people listen to NPR.

It costs XM about $100 to activate an account while it costs Sirius about 5 times that. On XM you can cancel your subscription and get a pro-rated price and you can also transfer your account to and from different units. Sirius subscriptions you can cancel, but you don't get any money back so it doesn't matter. You also can't transfer their subscription, so make absolutely sure you want Sirius before signing up for a longer term. Also Sirius has slightly better sound quality (XM shares its bandwidth with OnStar), but it's not really noticable. Sirius also has 3 satalites (while XM only has 2), but that doesn't really mean anything as only 2 are transmitting at any given time.

Anything I missed?

You have to pay extra for O&A

I listen to XM about 15 hours a week...and most of the channels are garbage- just like the radio, they play the same songs over and over...

Sirius is just as bad, but it has better sports coverage- but it is also more expensive- $12.99/mo and XM is $9.99/mo.

Stern on Sirius is awesome. Sports on Sirius is awesome. You can buy a lifetime subscription for $500. So basically if you pay for 3 years up front of service, you never pay them again.

And I listen to NPR for car talk //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I have Sirius and love it. If you want info on both, go to their respective forums

http://www.siriusbackstage.com

http://www.xmfan.com (i think that is it)

Both services are offering free access to their music channels online right now so you can check out the channels.

Sirius charges $12.99/month(cheaper if you pay for a year, 2 years, etc)

XM is a little cheaper upfront, but they also add for different things(opie and anthony, and I believe to access XM online is another $4/month).

Having access to Sirius online is great. I can listen in my office, and I don't need any other equipment.
