xbox modding

I am thinking about getting into doing some light modding to my old xbox, but not ready to put a chip in it yet. I was sitting here and wondering...

If I take the hdd out of my xbox and hook it up in my external hdd case copy all files and take my 250gb hdd and partition it the same way as the xbox hdd copy all the files to it would the 250gb hdd work in the xbox.

Also am I able to put a new dashboard on the xbox if I was to hook it up via external hdd

You won't be able to do anything to the harddrive, unless you have the unlock code, that's specific to your xbox. But yeah check out xbox-scene, they have tons of information to help you out with that.
