I need an inexpensive capacitor. It's for a 520 RMS amp do it doesn't have to be huge but I do prefer at least 1 farad. I'm looking to spend less than 40 shipped. Obviously I don't care if its used, just not one that's thrashed and 2 years old.

thanks for your help //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/thumbsdown.gif.d22f25895e9b40f2300c953691dacfa2.gif......jerk.

What did I say to elicit that response from you? I am finally putting a system in my car. I've been accumulating stuff for 4 months. I have everything but a capacitor. I couldn't afford the one I want, so I thought I'd see if someone had one they upgraded from. I thought, when I got a few more bucks, I would get a better one.

If I said something ignorant, like maybe I need a bigger cap, wouldn't it be more constructive to tell me, so I don't make a mistake. Isn't that what this forum is for?

I found this place by a basic yahoo search. The search results said "the internets #1 resource for the beginner, or expert". Not everyone spends every waking hour, neckdeep in car audio. I have been working for a long time to put myself in a position to go to medical school. I start in January. So forgive me if I said something, less than brilliant, about my desire for a "stop gap" capacitor.

Oh yeah, I gaot a Kole audio 2.5 farad off ebay for $40. When I can, I'll replace it with a better one.

you dont really need a capacitor for no offense such a small system. most people will probably tell you you dont need one cause they are basically just for looks. that is unless you have a 10,000w rms amplifier and 4-6 subs then you might need one but other than that you shouldnt need one.

OK here's the deal.....I actually have more than just the one 520RMS amp. But the sub amp was all I was concerned about. I'd rather have one, than not have one. But, I got it squared away. However, Thanks for your input.

i feel different about the whole "you don't need a cap'' theory...If capacitors did not help somewhat then why would amplifier manufacturers use them on the circuit boards on their amps? they ALL use them. If caps had no energy storage value, or fast discharge and recharge rate, they would have no electrical use. Then i could see ppl saying you dont need them.....has anyone read the recent test in PAS mag about the metering with and without the cap test?

capacitors act as a "electronic cushion"

all they do is prevent major surges and voltage drops most of the time they are more dangerous than helpful cause capacitors can store energy for days and weeks and if you accidentally touch they terminals even with you're hands you can get a major shock.

dont forget in cameras they use capacitors. even tho they are 300v at 20uf they are still strong enough to pierce your skin with the amount of energy stored.

now imagine a 1 farad capacitor. that would be 1000uf that would be around enough to give you severe burns and possibly a heart attack/kill you.

so when it comes down to the final statement

CAPACITORS ARE JUST FOR LOOKS

and i didnt copy and paste this.

this is what i do all day long besides ride bikes i sit on my @$$ and read about electronics.

a cap is the cure for a 10,000 rms electrical pull? and the number of subs you have determines if you need a cap or not? FAIL!
