World Cup popularity

Is it just me, or do a lot more people care about the world cup this year than usual? I mean, I know it sounds like a dumb question, seeing that soccer is the most popular sport in the world, but this year, a lot more people seem to be interested in it here.
Maybe it's just Jacksonville... I don't know... but everyone has been ranting about the world cup, whereas in years past, I can't remember anyone saying anything about it. Has anyone else noticed this?

I think its always been popular like this

it comes every 4 years though

I think it has to do with USAs performance in '02. They made it to the quarterfinals and lost due to a controversial call in which a German defender got a handball which prevented a goal that would have tied the game. Also this years squad was suppose to be the best USA has ever had. Therefore they got lots of publicity. They and the coach didnt perform though. 4 more years of practice to come and hopefully a new head coach, too.

I remember when USA upset Colombia 8 years ago....

There was alot of media coverage and alot of people started to fly US flags around here

I was sad though...I always go for Colombia and Mexico

BTW...the Colombian mafia killed the dude who kicked the ball into his own net.....I believe his name was Escobar

Soccer is actually pretty fun. I recently just started kicking the ball around, and I got pretty addicted to it. It amazes me how much movement these guys can get on the ball when their shooting for goals. This is coming from a hardcore football guy too.

It's the media's power over the more simple minded out there. They pound in how popular it is over seas untill people decide it's "cool" to be into it and go to bars and get wasted watching it. The truth is, it sucks.

The field is about 50% too big and the ammount of cheating they allow would make the NBA blush.

The media does have a powerful grasp on American minds. I've written papers to prove it too.

Its not cheating. Soccer is known as a fast paced game, no time outs, limited subs, 2 halfs not quarters. If they called every foul regardless of the level, a soccer game would take nearly 2.5-3 hours, and it wouldnt be near as interesting since just about any form of contact would stop play except for shoulder to shoulder.

i agree, even though it looks like they walk every 5 seconds the are mostly out there for 90 minutes in the sun w/o water breaks, its a very physical sport (just look @ their legs, their calfs (sp?) are huge!)

In most every country on the planet soccer is hugely popular over most any other form of sport there is.

The media hype is motivated by the same thing it always is ~ some marketing firm's quest for the Almighty Dollar. Nothing more, nothing less.

Might be the worlds most popular, but here in the states I say American football owns that title. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I've never watched a complete soccer game.. most I've ever watched in one sitting is probably 5 mins. But this year I've watch 5-6 complete games.. dunno why. Maybe cause all the good sports are over? NBA/NFL/Hockey gone.. MLB sucks.. dunno.
