A guy I work with asked me to take a look at his setup, because it was cutting out. So, we open the hood, no fuse in the 10 gauge power wire, which is just spread out under the battery terminal. So, I disconnect that. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/uhoh.gif.c07307dd22ee7e63e22fc8e9c614d1fd.gif

Then we open his trunk. Hes got two of the SPL5000 Pioneer Premiers 10"s (which he "got a deal on" at a local store, $300 for the pair, because they were display models) in a tiny sealed box with obvious air gaps at the top, and two of the sides.

I see his power wire going into his amp, which doesnt have the wire mounting screws in it, so the wire just sits in there, ready to fall out. I pick the amp up to conceal some wire, and there is no bottom panel on the amp. Thats right, no bottom panel, so the bottom of the board is just sitting on the carpet. The top panel is also off of the amp. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif

I then look closer at the amp, and see the gain- its got a range of two volts to three volts. A little voice is going off in my head, I remember seeing an amp like this before......so I ask him if he has the bottom panel and top cover. He does, but he took them off because they were getting hot, and he wanted the amp to be able to get some air. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

The point of all of this- in this ghetto rigged, fire waiting to happen mess of an install- was a Mcintosh 427. Yeah, thats right.

Now, I dont have personal experience with this amp, but I am aware that mcintosh is a good company.

I tested the amp out in my car, it works fine. Im buying it off of him tomorrow, for, well a very nice price.

Question is, does anyone have any links to this amp, or any idea what its worth?

Sounds like you helped him out alright. Helped him out of his amp and into your hands. "For a very nice price."

Hes the one that suggested it....Would it be better to let him take it to the pawn shop? Its not like I told him, "oh, thats junk, but Ill help you out by taking it...." I told him Mcintosh is a good brand, but he wants more power.

Dont try to act like you wouldnt do the same thing.

Why didn't he want it?

Because he wants a bigger amp. I guess it was in his car when he got it, along with some "furcal" (Im thinking Focal) comps, but he sold them to his brother for $20. Typical newb setup, just wants subs, no comps or anything. I wasnt being a bad guy, trying to rip him.....but if he was going to take it to the pawn shop, why shouldnt I buy it?

You did the right thing by buying it I guess, I just sounded like you "convinced" him into selling it to you for a good price by your first post. Which isn't "wrong" but would be not nice? I dont know. A friend, no Co-worker who knows probably, Some idiot, sure.

But yeah if he was getting rid of it sure.

niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice

i cannot believe that such a jewel of an amp was being abused and mistreated....thats almost sacreligious to me :p either way, between a pawn shop or u.....you made the RIGHT descion.....how muc hu getting it for? also whats the specs?

Specs Ive found so far are 100 x 2, and .005 thd.

"2 channels X 100w. Bridgeable. Includes built-in electronic crossover with selectable high pass and low pass filters. Power guard. MOSFET PWM power supply. Ported tunnel forced air cooling. Multi-stage thermal protection. Input level controls. Transient protection. Gold plated terminals. 2 ohm stability. Size 2-1/8"H, 11-1/4"W and 10"D. Sold from 1995-1997. Last retail price $500.00"

Thats a quote from one on ebay at the moment.

Ill end up selling it, Im sure.

The same guy has a Pioneer DVD receiver. No screen, just an indash receiver. He wants to trade both of these (the Mcintosh amp and the Pioneer dvd receiver) for my ED 9.4.......I really have no use for either, but should I do it, then just sell the stuff I get from him?

Since its just an indash receiver, it wont have a brain with it, correct?

Would you guys make the trade? And should that receiver have a brain with it?
I would almost guarntee that amp will fetch what a new nine.4 costs, to the right buyer. I'd go for it in a heart beat. Just my 2 cents, at least my business side //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif.

Yep, got $325 shipped out of the amp.

Worked out well.

damm nice man. it's a crime to let noobs keep nice equipment, but it's also kinda mean that u made a profit off of it. i would gave him a small cut of the profits if he was a nice guy.
