Artist "Lucy P" bared more than her soul to drivers on State Highway 50 near Napier yesterday in her bid to stop ****.
About 50 supporters watched as the 31-year-old, who was sexually violated by a man earlier this year, painted a 7-metre by 2.5-metre billboard with a plea to parents to tell their sons not to ****, stripped off her clothes and doused herself in red paint. *****, she huddled beside her artwork like a **** victim. Titled *****in Billboard, a board about integrity and truth, the performance art was self-help too, she said.
A fourth-year student at Eastern Institute of Technology, she has been unable to finish her degree since the attack.
"For me, this is closure. This board is taking that pain and turning it into power. I want people who have been ***** to see this and feel strong, to stand up for themselves, to not feel shame."
Women's Refuge spokeswoman Sheryl Hann supported the message. "People tell women it's their fault. It isn't. We need more people to speak up about violence and the victims of violence to stand up, to show they can survive it."
The artist has gone ***** before for an exhibition at Eastern Institute of Technology, where she sat in a glass box for a week.
A man has been found guilty of ****** violation and will be sentenced next week.
