wiring subs without a box

Well i just got my subs in today and actual wont have a box for about a week and its killing me cause i wanna hear them. So will it cause any type of damage to the speaker if i just go wire them up in my car without a box and let them play? i dont plan on keeping them in there i just wanna hook them up and hear them will i even get any sound out if it? or would it just be pointless to do

They will play, but you stand the chance of over excursion and you won't gain any thing... the sound will hardly be "bass"...

The risk is to high for no benefit. If you want to ensure that they work, you can do it at a low volume, but only to test... no point otherwise

btw, using a 9volt battery is probably the easier (still not good) way to test a woofer.

If you keep the power really, really low you should be fine.

They won't move hardly any air or make much sound. If you actually want to listen to them it's pointless.

why in God's green earth would you do that.........................when I see people with 6x9's lying on the rear deck of their car, I wonder "what in the world"....wait till they can be installed correctly. You will NOT be happy with the out put, you will have cancellation and possibly hurt your new subs.

There is no point in hooking it up free-air, there will be next to no output and you are just risking damaging your driver, wait on the box.......

If you hook your subs up without a box, the rear waves will cancell the front waves out resuling in zero bass. You'll hear midrange on up frequencies out of them but that's it. Basically when the wavelength of what you're playing through the speaker is longer than the spider is wide the wave cancells out (when it's free-air like you're talking about).

Anyway, no bass, just mids. Use a very small amount of power.

I know you're excited, but wait until you have a box or you'll be disappointed with what you hear.

it'll be a good way to break in the suspension, but not a good way to see how it'll sound.
