Wireless Internet

I have a linksys wrt45g.... which is one of thier wireless routers. I had to talk with "tom" SEVERAL times. Wasn't fun. After you talk with them, they email you a survey based on how well they were. One of the options on the survey asks if it was hard to understand them based on thier accent.

I use the router wired with another computer in the house, and then i use the wireless for my D-Link wireless gaming adapter for my xbox.

You have to do a bunch of stuff in your /ms config /cmd prompts and then put it into your router settings.

Hmmm ...
I'm pretty sure I was using this Linksys wireless router with a D-Link modem before.
You should have been able to do that:

D-Link is a product of linksys, or so i was told by the Best Buy employees that sold me my D-Link wireless gaming adapter so i could play xbox live wireless. Which after i got everything setup worked fine for over a year now.

the password is encrypted
linksys is cisco, who uses all sorts of proprietary security and encryption schemes, you have to use a linksys modem, as well as the linksys software or it wont work

netgear's a lot less picky
complete and utter nonsense.

The router will pick up any connection that is "live", period, and it feeds it out in a completely standard way based on the encryption type you choose (WPA, WEP, etc).

Double check your physical connections, i.e. whats coming from where going into which port (cable modem to "internet" port of router, etc.), to me it sounds like its not getting that "live" net connection input, and your computer can see the wireless router and utilize it, but the router has nothing to give the computer (ip address).

best buy employees FTL
i often school them on many things when asked if i need help
Lol, i didnt care whether they were right or not, i just wanted the 100$ part to work and function correctly. It is quite fun to go into the car audio section and talk to the ppl shopping. You can hear some good stories there.

d-link is a linksys repackaged by best buy

and besides, you can change the security, there's a few neutrally accepted security schemes.

the trick is still going to be the password, tho, because the linksys program automatically encrypts the password into the real password

for example, you type your password, say "caraudio"

what the program sees, and sends to the router is something more along the lines of "800b 1e33s s8867 s42qz 491q 48sv"

without that encrypted password, you can't set it up without the actual linksys software, because if you tell windows the password is just "caraudio" it wont connect

netgear does the same thing, but the netgear software actually shows the encrypted password as you type in the plain text password, and then you can copy and paste, print it out, and use it to setup your other comptuters
