Wireless Internet

Eh Dere Hi Dere Ho-ser
About to give up with this piece of shit.

I had it configured at one location and it was working just fine.

I'm now at a new location and want to use it here.

Plugged the wireless router in, plugged the internet connection into it, then turned the wireless switch to 'on' on my laptop.

Go to the available internet connections page and find "linksys" ... which I'm sure is mine because the rest of the connections listed have their own usernames and the signal strength is not great.

Try to connect to that "linksys" connection and it asks me for a password. The last time it was set up the name of the network was not "linksys" ... a password showed up in both of the boxes so I just used that one (which I'm sure is the same as the one from the other network name).

Guess I should mention that the old location and the new location both use the same ISP, however, the lines are different (IE: the line at the old location still exists, this is a brand new line in a different name) ... don't know if that makes any difference or not.

It's stuck trying to "acquire the network address" and I'm lost.

Any insight? Thanks in advance.

perform a hard reset on the router

push in the reset button on the back, remove the power cable, and continue to hold the reset for about 60 secons to ensure reset, plug the power back into the router and release the reset button...might have to re-configure the router like you did when you first bought it, with the driver cd and whatnot...that should rid the router of its password protection...boo bam!

Is the password protection preventing it from acquiring the network address?

It's the correct password and all, it just won't get the address.

well in many cases, if the security is locking it up it will just say "aquiring network address" for a long period of time, and then it will time out and give an error unable to connect...if you reset it, you can try it without security and see if it works then...then you can re apply your password...

Doesn't work.

Did the reset, re-ran the configuration disk, got to the last step and it said it couldn't find my internet connection or some bullshit like that.

I tried to get it going three months ago and it didn't work then either. I don't have the patience to deal with it (hence three months going by) so back in the box it goes until I feel like trying to screw with it again.

I **** at setting them up too...

If you are still willing to try it on monday, I can get you a tech guy on the phone to walk you through it.

Let me know if you are interrested in that and then PM me the number and time you want me to call you.

I'll have to call them later on.

I'd rather not get pissed off at some tech guy right now who doesn't deserve it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

the password is encrypted

linksys is cisco, who uses all sorts of proprietary security and encryption schemes, you have to use a linksys modem, as well as the linksys software or it wont work

netgear's a lot less picky

well they are outsourced technical support so you are going to be talking to ali muhammad (tom) but they do a good job for the most part...

its hard for me to keep my calm sometimes, but once its working its worth it haha

You're kidding me? I guess that's why it worked at the other location.

I'm all for encryption and security ...

I got this modem for free when I signed up for this connection.

Maybe I should just swap it out.

ya, just get another linksys

they're awesome routers/modems, they well justify the price

and obviously, the security is top notch

the way i do it at my house, tho, is i have a linksys with the encryption turned off, and simply programmed the router with the MAC addresses of mine and my roomate's computers, so no other computers can log on, regardless of whether or not they have the password, without cloning the mac addresss of one of our computers (a lot of work to steal basic package roadrunner)

I finally just got my linksys router setup as well, have my desktop (home base) , my room mates desktop hardlined, and my laptop via wireless.

6 months till its finally working right.

Hmmm ...
I'm pretty sure I was using this Linksys wireless router with a D-Link modem before.
im doing it right now

netgear N on a linksys N router...im not going to say that hes wrong, but, its not true to the nth degree...there can be more complications maybe...you really just need to get them jiving...its hard to do support for me online, if i was at the jawn boo bam lickidy split...linksys support ftw...
