windows

OK so I really like the way my set up sounds with the windows rolled up...but when I put them down it seems like I lose about half my volume and sound quality is not as good....I understand why it happens but has anyone come up with a way around it? I'm thinking some kind of processor/compensator but at the same time it's just one more piece of equipment to run the signal through...and I don't think I want one of those radio's that changes the volume based on acceleration...I don't remember it being this bad with my other setups...

Usually sound INCREASES when you roll your windows down. Are you just sitting in your car not moving, or are you going 70 MPH on the freeway when u roll down your windows? Cuz if your movin, the noise from the windows is going to make your system sound quieter. Other then that, maybe it's just your imagination? IDK, but thats the opposite of what the norm is.

the bass gets louder when I crack a window or the roof...but when the windows are all the way down it is not as loud...yeah part of it is the road noise...
There is no way around road noise with the windows being down. That is seriously a stupid question.

You say you know why it happens, care to share your knowledge?

The bass should increase with the windows down (not being in movement that is) due to cabin gain.

Depends on the vehicle/install. Some people are louder sealed up, but that's very rare.

i just crack them a bit, and it gets louder, even moving

on the highway's a different story... my setup's mostly low end, so it gets drowned out fairly fast on the highway windows up OR down

lowend meaning low lows, that is //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

How do you figure it gets louder with the windows down? I have my tweets mounted around the tops of my door panels, and when I roll mine down, the sound goes right out the window. Same with subs. You got pounding loud bass, but as soon as you open the trunk, most of it disappears. Oh yeah, and road noise. Shit...

The rule of cabin gain. When you are all sealed up, your whole car acts like a sealed enclosure, and the subs are pushing against the air tight chamber. When you roll down a window (allow more air to move freely), all of a sudden more movement can be achieved, and that results in higher SPL. On the trunk issue, thats because your car relies on the trunk to bounce the waves to the rest of your car (up front). If you open the trunk, it's gong to go stright out, and not into the cabin. But windows is a totally different thing, because they are up front after the waves have already reached the cabin, and then allow more air to flow. Yes its going outside, but the more air flow you have, the more SPL you are going to have in the cabin as well.

On a second note: I dont like the sound of my system at high levels with my windows up. It just doesnt get as loud. A simple crack of the window will fix it. Unless im on the freeway, or moving real fast, then I just turn the bass down and listen at lower levels until im in slower speed ares.

That wasn't my question. Why don't you read the whole thread again and then STFU. your only considering bass so I could not care less about any other dumb thoughts you might have...

well I guess so even though your attention span won't allow you to read it all.

The sound pressure level is greater with the windows up because the sound is trapped inside the car...cracking the window can be compared to trying to blow air into a sealed jar...pretty hard to get more air in once the jar is full...put a small hole in the jar and it gets easier for you blow into the jar because some of the air is escaping...Same with speakers that are moving air..crack a window and the speakers don't have to work as hard to move since some air is being allowed to escape...put a big hole in the jar and you have to blow much harder to keep the same amount of air in it...

Yes, but a window isnt a big enough hole to decrease it. I can see what you are saying, but when you crack the window, it allows more air to move. More air movemnt = Louder. On the speakers, that would be to road noise. Keep your windows up on the higher speed roads.
