why not use a 3rd party program?

bring up the properties of the cd-rw drive, click on the recording tab and enable desktop cd recording

Are you looking for a program to burn? If thats what you're talking about, Windows XP's burner is a drag-and-drop type. There isn't a program window or anything that you can open up.
