Windows Vista?

I'm a computer science student at my university, so I get free MSDN access... with that said I've loaded Vista Business on my laptop and desktop... 32bit on my laptop(centrino 1.3gig with 1gig of ram) and 64bit version on my desktop(3gig dualcore and 2gigs of ram). Both computers run it flawlessly. I like it alot, but I know some people don't.

The only problem I had was getting peerguardian to work because of the ipv6 tables... peerguardian has since came out with a beta that now works fine with vista. I had no hardware conflicts or anything, I really like it.

I will be buying a laptop for school within the next month or so, and I am debating whether to stick with Windows XP or to go ahead and get Vista Home Premium. I have gotten mixed reviews about Vista.
I have heard there are a lot of compatibility issues with Vista, as well as annoying security alerts every time you start a program. Also Vista lacks a "Run" command or a Command prompt, and diagnostics are pretty well impossible without calling Microsoft.

I also have heard that Vista is nice and easy to use, and generally runs faster than XP. I like the looks of Vista, and the features such as Media Center are really nice, but I haven't had much chance to use it for more than a few minutes at the store.

I've been using XP for a few years now, and I know the pros and cons of XP. Basically I want to know how well people like Vista and whether or not people have been having trouble with it.

Thanks,

Matthew
There is no "run" in the start but I have yet to type something into search that didn't open the program (ie....type notepad into search and notepad runs)

1. Compatibility issues- If you google it, you will find the driver you need. Most people that say they have issues are either too lazy, or dont know how to do this.

2. Permission to open a program - This can be disabled in your control panel.

3. Run Command - Vista does not lack this, whoever told you that is a fuckass.

4. Faster than XP - It is a tad bit slower, but nothing you wont notice if you arent a hardcore gamer/computer tweaker.

Hope this helps. I have been running vista on my big machine since it came out, with absolutly no problems. If you are going to get this laptop, please, take this advice...

1GB ram nominal. 2GB for best performance.

I will definitely go with 2 gigs of RAM, and at least 1.8 gig processor. I think I will probably go with an Intel Core 2 Duo with Centrino Pro, so meeting system reqs will be no problem. I also am not sure about software compatibility. I have heard that Vista will not run many programs that previous versions of Windows did. I also have heard that only Office 2007 and Norton's Anti-virus will work with Vista. I despise Norton's and I already have a copy of Office 2003, so this concerns me also.

As far as system diagnostics, I have heard Vista makes it darn near impossible to diagnose anything without calling MS.

Is this true or just Anti-Vista BS?

what is that going to set you back? I'm not going into engineering or anything super computer-dependent anymore, so I won't quite need anything as serious as that, but I do want something nice that will last me all 4 years.

btw, I was told by several people to wait until at least the second week of August because that is when all the back to school sales hit. My friend told me at Circuit City where he works that I will be able to get an $1100 notebook for about $800

the irony is i am going into the college of engineering at OSU lol

I was going to go into Architecture, but plans changed and now I am going into Youth Ministry and Secondary Ed. So now I save some money on a computer because I won't have to run Autocad or Inventor/Solidworks that **** all the processing power. I might buy AutoCAD though if I can get a hold of a copy from the school bookstore cheap. I don't want to completely waste 3 years of CAD classes, and I love making drawings.

I started running vista when it was still in the RC beta builds. They did ****. I've been running Vista ultimate Final build for almost 6months now. I'm running an Acer aspire, amd Turion 64 with 1gb of ram. My laptop runs very fast with no problems. The annoying pop-up for permisions is called User account control and can easily be disabled in the control panel, or MSCONFIG. and yes there is a run command, and it can be put on the start menu, or you could just hold the windows key and hit R. Vista is obviously not going to run the same on everybody's computer, and does take some tweaking to get it right for each person. So what I tell people, if you're not really into changing and customizing your PC settings yourself and just want to turn on the computer and go, then XP is what you want. If you are semi-computer savy, and want a nice looking, multi-media system then vista will work just fine. And there are a few nice forums out there full of all kinds of Vista help and tweaks. Hope this helps.

My roommate just got a new laptop with vista....I hate it. you cant do much without a little security thing poping up asking you questions. XP for sure.
Yea there is NO way to disable it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif
