windows media center edition rant

media center edition is crap

from the day i got it it's been giving me nothing but issues

first, my system would never boot up, so i updated the bios on my crap asus video card, and the thing died

compusa replaced my video card with a pretty nice ati radeon x900 PCI-E video card

now when i try and watch tv in media center, it says video error, wtf?

i have the drivers for my video card, drivers for my tv tuner, all of my windows components updated, installed sp2, installed windvd so i have a commercial-quality mpeg-2 codec, and still no dice

the soon-to-be infamous mythbusters episode is coming up in two days, and my roomate never called me back to help me move my gigantic (due to age, it's only a 27" but weighs a good 200 pounds) tv into the new apartment, so i had the cable guy come out and install a new cable outlet right by my computer just so i could watch the **** episode on my comp

and now this......

i really hate this computer

to top it all off, it has the pentium 4 3600 processor that they discontinued due to problems and bad resource management, and the **** thing cost me $2400 and now there's no such thing as a $2400 computer, so even if i got this hunk of shit replaced under warranty, there's no equivelant processor anymore

this computer is a PITA, i hope my crap water heater explodes and takes me and this **** computer with it

you probably have 2005 edition, which came out in december of 2004...

i bought mine in october.... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/mad.gif.c18f003ab0ef8a0d9c27ca78d77a6392.gif

it's not even compatible with that media center extender that lets you access your media center on your tv in another room..... that's the slickest shit ever

I found out about this crack that lets xp users take advantage of wmc without buying anything or reinstalling.

search for a torrent called "windows xp to media center edition"

Im downloading it right now. Need if for my xbox 360.

WMC2005 is amazing, I love it.

let me know how that works for ya. hope microsoft doesnt mind

Ive had windows MCE since 2004 and never installed it in my computer LOL. I had a technet CD and its never been used. Dont ewven know the difference between it and XP Pro which is what im using.

the o/s isn't different in any way shape or form, it's just an addon media interface that's added on

microsoft only sells/released it as OEM software, tho, which i suppose is smart on their behalf, so that they can assure the only people who (legally) have the software have all the proper supported hardware to support it

i took my computer to compusa yesterday, and found out that my tuner card is actually messed up, wasn't a hardware or driver conflict

it just threw me for a loop, because the card was still 'alive' enough to be detected and installed through windows, but the video capture device onboard got fried back when my first power supply went nutty on me

thankfully i drew up some incredible hulk energy yesterday (probably the adrenaline kicking in thinking i was gonna miss the mythbusters episode tonight) and i moved my tv by myself. **** thing's gotta weigh 200+lbs. and it has cup handles, but they're only deep enough to grip with your fingertips...... I sat down and cried for an hour afterwards.

But my comp's getting fixed for free as we speak, and i'll be able to watch the mythbusters episode tonight to boot. So i apologize to my computer for the hateful rant.

And ya, i've used MCE2005, and it's way way better. 2004 doesn't even let you burn your recorded episodes to dvd, or use the media center extender, so your recorded shows are doomed to be played back only on your computer.

And yes, i've heard of the media center add-on crack for standard windows xp. I believe it's a bootdisk that you use to start your computer, but isn't permanently installed. I tried installing the bootlegged mce2005 floating around, tho, and i found it very buggy. It's one of those 'stripped down' xp distrobutions that has everything down to internet explorer removed. I'll stick to what my computer came with, and hope it dies before next october so i can get it replaced for free. With the number of problems i've had with it already, tho, i think my dreams will come true.
