i found an old 12' crossfire dual voice coil subwoofer in my garage and cleaned it up. im trying to get it up and going for as cheap as possible. from what i understand it can either be wired to 2 or 8 ohms. i found this amplifier at walmart for 55$ -- dualav.com/mobileaudio/xpe.php. it is a 2-channel 400w amp. it states that it is 2-ohm stable, and that it can be bridged. what i am wondering is this, can i wire my subwoofer down to 2 ohms, and then bridge the amp to one channel to get approx 250-300 watts rms? or would this be completely too much? it says that it is two ohm stable in stereo operation, so i dont see why it wouldnt be able to do the same, but with just with one sub. any help is greatly appreciated. thanks.

this raises another question, since it is dvc 4/8 ohm, if i just wired each voice coil to a channel, what impedance would that be? also if i did do that, and it was 2 ohms, how would i wire that to a terminal in the box and then to the amp? would i have to add another terminal to the box? sorry, im just new to the intricacies of impedance load and what not.

you could wire each coil to each channel if it was a dvc4. but tbh i wouldn't waste my time buying some junk amp from walmart. the problem with 2 channels when running them in sub setups is most aren't 1 ohm stable. that AP mini is about one of the cheapest 1k amps you can get. it's double what you would get for the walmart one but your amp is what drives your system and it's not exactly something you should be skimping out on

i know what you mean with skimping, but atm its just something to get going, and the sub is virtually useless- so i dont want to spend big bucks on an amp when the sub is very temporary. on the back of the sub it reads 2/8 ohm. since the amp is 2 ohm stereo stable, what load would i be at if i wired each voice coil directly to a channel? if it was at 2 ohms per channel that would be perfect, but i have had alot of trouble actually finding out for sure.

i think that by 2/8 ohm it means that there are two 4 ohm voice coils, but i cant really figure out because there is no documentation for it. i have searched google everywhere. on the front it says crossfire cfa and on the back it says 250 and 2/8 ohms. if anyone knows anything about it or where i can get some more information please let me know.

Are you willing to buy used? you might be able to get something better for around that price if you make a WTB ad.

I know what you mean with having trouble finding info on older crossfire subs. I have a older crossfire BMF sub but cant find much on the net about it

the easiest way to find the actual impendance, would be to just take a dmm to each voice coil and see what ohms it reads... and round it to the nearest whole # (i.e. if it reads 1.85, its a 2 ohm voice coil... they're never spot on)

as far as the wiring goes, try this out

Rockford Fosgate® - Woofer WiringWizard

and, dont buy anything from walmart.... even if it says 400 watts, you'd prolly get lucky to see 100 rms out of it. the audiopipe amp in previous post is about the best amp you can get on a budget

i dont know anything about them at all. i found mine in a friends garage and though i could be able to throw something together very cheaply just to add a little bass. mine reads 250 on the back, but i dont really know how to interpret that. it is a sizable sub with good looking build quality, so i dont think it is a mass wattage, but i could be wrong.

what ya wanna know? i still have the cf guide from back in the day......op- what is your price range on an amp?

Okay so you have 2 voice coils both wired alone out of the box would to wired at a total of 8 ohms. Now wiring them in parallel will drop it to 2 ohms. If you have a monoblock, which most are 2 ohm stable it would be fine, but a 2 channel from walmart will melt bridged at 2ohms. Then wwhen you have to buy another you might as well of just bought the audiopipe instead.
