I just got a new laptop with a wifi card. Im new to this stuff, so I have a few questions. First, we were driving around my house (in a car), and I have a couple public networks right around here. But when I get out of my car, I cant get anything. So when im inside, I have to use dial-up. But when im out in my car, I can get reception, and have a few networks.

Why is this?

Is there anyway I can get my laptop to get a signal inside my house?

The walls of your house are probably blocking the public wifi signal which doesn't travel well through objects. If you have a wifi card in the laptop, as opposed to built in, you might be able to connect an external antenna to get better reception.

For finding wifi networks try running netstumbler (http://www.netstumbler.com) This work well on the pc in my truck. Around detroit subs I can usually pick up 6-10 networks at any given time.

Move to a window? Try to get the clearest path to the source of the signal if possible.

try the laptop from every window in your house...if you are able to get a signal from one of the windows then you will just need a repeter...something that will take the signal from the window and distribute it to the rest of the house. I use one to steal wifi from my dads house.

i recently got a laptop with a wifi card for my fiance, and we were headed back from my parents house to my house. and in the little armpit of a town where we grew up there was a point where i could access 7 networks, and only 2 were encrypted. one labeled "netgear" was pretty strong and we were able to pick it up for like 1/4 of a mile it seemed. if i chill in my parents kitchen i get almost perfect signal, all un encrypted.

Okay, there's 2 places in my house that I can get a signal, but it's a VERY weak. It's not strong enough to connect tho. So if I get a repeater, will it boost that signal, allowing me to connect, or do I need to have a strong signal to begin with?
