Why is it that...

People seem to think other peoples systems are louder because they are felt more than others, Like i know my set up is louder than my dads (SQ), but I was sitting in it and listening to it today and it seemed louder because it was punchier and you could feel it more... Heres another example... In mine when you play a 20Hz tone you can hear it (kinda) and you see the rear deck and seats shaking but not really anything else, but in his when you play a 20Hz tone and stand out the window your shirt is moving 1"-1 1/2" and it seems louder because of that.. All Im saying is now I kinda want a sytem like his that gets really loud and you can feel it alot rather than mine which get really really loud but you cant feel it as much as his... Anyways thats something thats been bugging me is that people that have sat in mine and his saying his is louder because it shakes the crap out of you, now if he had the box that was in it omg then I would understand because It got stupid loud and I thought the back half of the car was going to fall apart lol but it just annoys me that people think that...

To answer your question, it depends on the tuning and transfer function of the vehicle, as you've observed. The human ear is very detailed sometimes, but also sometimes very inaccurate, and can be fooled into thinking something that an SPL meter says otherwise...
