why is efficiency so critical

Here's a bit of real world..

JL W7 8" sealed .5 cuft

W78sealed.jpg

Re 8" sealed .5cuft

RE8sealed-1.jpg

W7 8" ported 1.0 cuft 35hz

W7_ported.jpg

Re 8 ported 1.0 cuft 35hz

RE_Ported.jpg

RE 8 efficiency - .13% (83.3 db 1w/1m)

W7 8 efficiency - .112% (82.7 db 1w/1m)

why was the W7 as loud with 50 watts, and much louder with 100 and 200 watts than the RE 8?

RE was supposed to be .5 db louder... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Here's some more real world..

Mach 5 12's 85.5 db 1w/1m

SI Mag 12's 85.7 db 1w/1m

MagsandMach5saveo.jpg

MagsandMach5saveo800watt.jpg

nearly identical efficiency... yet the mags are 3 db louder on the low end, and the mach's are louder on the upper end with 50 watts, and not as loud as the mags on the upper end with 800 watts.. its not supposed to be that way?

you installed it wrong!!! lol jk
I **** at teh review... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I've always been a big fan of real world testing.. the meter doesn't care what woofer looks good on paper..

Pfft, we're on the internet ... Real-world results and personal experience don't actually matter here, n00bx ...
you're right.. I just modeled the drivers in ISD.. and it doesn't look anything like what I tested..

I guess I did do it wrong.... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

INTERWEB OWNZ MI!

you didnt put enough holy water on the cone orbreak them in propperly heck i bet you didnt hook them up equally one was in series the other parallel lol JK its too late to try and be off the wall retarded ...im usually better at being such when i have had sleep

:snaps fingers:

I know what I did!!!!!!!!!!

I made it all up.... because I hate how box programs nail performance every time... I tried to build myself up, so you guys would believe me... ****!

hmm...it couldnt be a difference in power compression could it Loyd?!? Where do I find that in WinISD! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Seriously man, you act as though efficiency doesnt tell you exactly how loud the woofer is with 1w in any box with real world power...

show me a woofer that is 10 db at 1 watt at 1 meter and better yet where does this fall in an actual system? and since when did a larger motor mean its automatically more efficient? spl finals or not some of the same techniques used there can be applied to a loud daily driver. saying what you just said would be like saying xmax is the 1 factor if you had a sealed box with 2 12" woofers the same size with one having an xmax of 1mm and another with 36mm......means nodda its like cereal without the milk or a juggy without any jugs.....

"actual system"

"loud daily driver"

"spl finals"

"sealed box"

A lot of words that pertain to no argument I am making.

In his case, it might be, a small 8" driver can power compress with a few hundred constant watts or less over a minute or so. The w7 8" has a larger 2.25" vc.. very large for an 8" driver. Second reason may be xmax limitations due to either compliance or coil height. Or some Bl product issue at higher excursion. Again, all this is real world based on VERY different variables. apples to oranges. My argument is very straight forward and irrefutable.

WinIDS is not the most accurate software, I don’t think it even factors in inductance. I don't use it. But then again, is he measuring anechoic ? I doubt it.

LEAP is pretty much dead nuts accurate and can do room gain/ reflections/interference

who cares about what they rate it at, efficiency is an unimportant number. yeah, you dont want a driver with 10 db rated SPL, but who the hell would make a driver like that.
how about an example:

10" tc-3000 vs 15" tc-3000

everything is pretty much equal (for the most part)

SPL on the 15" is 4dB higher.

which is louder?

don't give me different cone size bs, what do you think sensitivity directly relates to?? CONE SIZE and effective motor force which includes the Bl and moving mass.

haha. I was just kidding. WinISD is a POS, I just like to tease people for using it. :p

I'd wager it was a combination of BL induced and heat induced compression, since the RE driver uses a totally standard overhung design, whereas the 8w7's topology yields a flatter overall BL curve.
