The 12" XXX is often recommended as the sub to get. But why would anyone pick it over an 12" Alpine Type X?
Take a look at the graphs. Both subs are in ported boxes of 2 cu ft. The Alpine hits an amazing 20 Hz at -3dB! That's on par with HT sub setups. The XXX however hits a more modest 26 Hz at -3dB. Anything below -3dB results in the sub playing the signal at less than 1/2 power when compared to 0dB. Now, the XXX has an SPL advatange of around 2dB until 25Hz. At that point, the Type X outputs a higher SPL by a large amount. At 20 Hz the Type X has a 5-6 dB advantage in SPL over the XXX, a very large amount. Now, I must admit I have not heard either sub and am only going off of what people have told me and the numbers/graphs I see. People say both subs are excellent for SPL and SQ. Why then does it seem atleast to me that the XXX is so much more popular of the Type X when the Type X seems to be the better sub?
