i dont know if others do it, but UPS is doing it. Amp coulda been here today instead of tomorrow. They're just wastin gas imo. I was thinkin they'd ship straight down.

Because you used ground shipping. Ground packages are routed through the major UPS hubs scattered through out the world. UPS isn't the only company that does this, in fact it is standard practice for ground shipping with the major carriers.
