Why can't companies make true ratings?

Marketing, plain and simple. Companies put on their amplifiers what people want to see, and that's huge power numbers. What you have to realize is that they are not lying. "2000 watts peak (max) power!" Chances are, that the amp WILL in fact produce 2000 watts peak. For a fraction of a second. Thing is, each company does its own ratings and they decide what procedure to use. Knowing what to look for is the important part. Knowing to look for the RMS ratings at certain voltages with certain THD numbers is important. Sadly, the companies know that the average entry level car audio customer does NOT know this, and sadly, that's who they prey on to make their profits. That's the free market laissez-faire economy for you.I came across a link on the Soundillusions News section, but it's not there anymore... Josh, if you're out there do you still have that link for the implimentation of the standardized amplifier ratings??
Yeah, the shop(RF dealer) told me that RF started putting those huge, peak ratings on their amps because RF was losing a ton of sales to other companies who did that(sony and kenwood come to mind). The shop isn't happy about it, but RF says the amp will do that huge number(30% duty cycle or something and for like 1/2 a second or whatever). I guess the industry is coming out with a standard way to rate amplifiers which will make reputable companies happy.

it's a marketing strategy.
ppl wjho dont know bout car audio think tthey buying a 1000 watt amp, n then run a 800watt amp for speakers, n anotehr 1000watt fora nother sub n say tehy runnin almost 3000 watts, when they really runnin only 1000watts maybe.

ppl r just unirfomed that's all. even in the hu they advertise the peak wattage output, n preoutputs, not the actual rms.
So basically, what I said, but without grammar... or spelling... or english //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

your saying preout voltage is not a rms #?? all h/u's i've had have done the rated rms that the company says they do.

Why can't the ratings be ACCURATE...
The hither priced MFG.'s (and a good # of consumers) recognize that power is the key to an amp's "sq" so they WAY under-rate thier amps so thier 50W amp sounds a lot "cleaner" and "crisper" than the more affordable 50w amps. Not because of the expensive circuitry, lower tolerances, lower thd, DF, or s/n -- but because the high end amp actually puts out 100 watts while the reasonably priced amp only puts out 45 or 50.

there wont be any regulations soon. they have been talking about it for ohhh at least 5 yrs now with still nothing to show for it. why? you might ask? takes money and then you have these imported pos items coming in and under the way the international trade is set up all they have to do is meet ul codes thats it.
