Honestly, I love seeing a black doctor/lawyer, etc. And most of the people I know who would scorn a successful black person, are those older people of the "old South". Most of these are WAY on up in age.Curious you mention this Nathan, because every time I've been in the south these days, there are two types of people: those who scorn successful black people and those who respect and almost look up to them. I'm not talking about white people, I'm talking about everyone. Nowhere else have I seen this attitude. I was in Nashville (not quite far enough, but close) a few weeks ago and I saw this shit all the time. First, there was the guy who refused to get in the same elevator as me and my sister because it "smelled funny". Minutes later, an old white woman came over to me and asked if I would like to meet her daughter. I mean, there doesn't seem to be middle ground, but then again, I don't live in the south so correct me if I'm wrong.
I noticed that as soon as I began college. My take on my side, is that now that these blacks are at a university, they actually have grown the fk up and realize they do not have to dress all "gangster" or whatever you call it. A phi A and Phi Beta Sig are two very active black fraternities on campus, and they have ALWAYS represented themselves well when I see them. Wearing suits, nice polos, etc. Never see anyone wearing an A phi A jacket with baggy jeans and a jersey. And these two black fraternities also are very involved on campus which is nice to see. I remember one member of a black fraternity (don't remember which) ran for office in student government. The support they received and the backing from their fraternity was overwhelming, however they didn't get elected. It just isn't the same "black person" that is here at my university than it is a 1/2 mile down the street from my house. It is quite amazing, honestly.BTW why are black people dressing all peepy now?
I say this in a nice way, but maybe you're a jagoff. Maybe it is the way in which you interact with people that gives them that vibe off of you. It doesn't matter if you do or don't get smoked out with the dudes around the block every night. I never touch the shit, but I can be around my friends who do without making them feel like I'm better than them. Maybe it is you. Maybe it is you correcting your buddies and looking down on them and others because you are more privileged. I grew up poor, but at the same time, I went to the best schools in my area. Only time I stepped in public schools was for my buddy's graduations. Chicago Public school education has to be one of the worst in the world. But I have friends who made it through and a few are doing better than me, and a lot more aren't. But we never look down on the ones that aren't because of it. It is the life they chose.People tell me all the time (they only say it once, however) that I act white because I come from a household of two parents who are physicians, am majoring to be an EE and would rather make prototype circuitry instead of get yayoed up, and because I speak in a professional manner so I can be taken seriously. If acting black means that people are justified in calling me slurs, ****, I'll bleach myself any day. What people don't realize is that black is only a skin color, nothing more. It is not a personality, it is not a way of life or speaking. To tell a black person that they act or speak white is blatant backhanded racism.
Clothes don't make the man.......The man makes the man. Glad shit is getting better down there. From the stories I heard and read about down there, I would never set foot in Mississippi.I noticed that as soon as I began college. What "stories" have you heard and read about down here? I am not talking about 50+ years ago..I am talking about since the 1990s.Clothes don't make the man.......The man makes the man. i dont think its that deep. i think black people only started wearing "preppy" clothes because of what they see in the media. p diddy started wearing it, but i believe Kanye West took it to another level with his outfit. Now everywhere i look, black people are dressing like kanye west even those RIDICULOUS sunglasses. What you mean by pretty. I know when I left Bmore people were starting to get into tight clothes.......I mean maybe the baggy is going out of stylem who knows. I just were jeans and a collar shirt/ button up at work. ( Im a civil designer) but I still were like sean John, Rocawear, etc. But its not the 'Thug" image everyone seems to promote. Sh*t hopefully the preppy look would give people the motivation to goto to college.
Well Mr West is a different story. He's the rapping Madonna. But I as far as somewhat preppy I could understand. I mean when your young and stupid a dress code you could care less about. Its once you get older and mature you grow out of them fads. As for every rapper, I cant speak on them. Their rich, they can do what everi dont think its that deep. i think black people only started wearing "preppy" clothes because of what they see in the media. p diddy started wearing it, but i believe Kanye West took it to another level with his outfit. Who the **** are you to tell me how to live my life? I'm a ******* because I don't respect people who in turn respect failure? I have never ONCE said I look down on people because they're less fortunate. Never have I, and never will I. I DID, however, state that I do distance myself from ignorant black people who are too busy running the crack game instead of trying to get ahead in life. No one said anything about going to college and getting numerous degrees and using education as a means of success. Working two jobs so that your children can have things they want is just as similar. Hard work is what gains my respect, not being lazy and getting money doing illicit activities. Explain this to me, because I'm not sure what direction you're taking this, but quite frankly, I don't much like it.I say this in a nice way, but maybe you're a jagoff. So watch the way in which you interact with others rather than the way you speak. When I go to other cities, their diction sounds a lot different than mine. I go to Ohio and they sound "white" I guess. But those same Ohio cats with their sounding out every letter doesn't make me think they are better than me because I don't. Never dumb yourself down, but try not to Big Brain Brett cause you got you some schooling.

That's exactly my point. You make your life choices, but don't expect me to respect you because you want to throw your life away, ESPECIALLY after you try and belittle me because I want to make the image of black men more positive. I'm not going to dwell on you taking a different path, but the path is so familiar that I can't help but shake my head. If that's arrogant, then I'm as arrogant as they get.I agree with you both. No one should be felt sorry of looked down upon. But also if they choose not to do better, than that is their choice. Respect their wishes and move on. Dont pity those who want help themselves.
To suggest not looking down on people is telling you how to live your life?Who the **** are you to tell me how to live my life?
