Whoa, Circuit City

Well, I didn't feel like it was necessary to make a new thread, but I was out running some errands today and I drove by a Sound Advice (Tweeter) and decided to stop in. So, I'm in the audition room listening to some of the nicer Focal's, JL's, and Polk components... the guy walks in introduces himself and does the whole what are looking for thing. I really did want to get a chance to play around with the Alpine 205 in dash, but I asked if I could get a little demo of some of the components and a pair of W7 8's and then a single W7 12 in a ported enclosure. Well as he is running down the line of comps and every time a heavy bass note hit something in the room fell apart. First to go was the Polk crossover cover, next was the JL ZR tweeter frame thingy, and then grill of the Focal K2's went. At the end I looked at the guy like WTF is going on here. I joked with him and said "I hope your installations are of better quality than the installs in this room." Anyways, it might of been me, but I wasn't really impressed with the JL W7's (and I am a JL sub owner). For as much hype as they seem to get, they didn't sound that great or seem to get too loud.
What do you expect it to do? You were listening to something that is optimal for automobile use. Our room with subs at CC rattles like shit. It's a lot harder to sound deaden a whole room rather than a car.

LOL. The "boom room" at BBY was awful, it never worked right. I think they are going to redo it soon.

I would expect rattling, as my store (also a CC) rattles when we crank it, but I didn't expect top dollar components at a top dollar store to fall apart. Sound deadening had nothing to do with it.

I am not talking down that store, but I just thought it was funny when everything started falling apart and the salesman had an embarrassed look on his face.

The performance of the W7(s) you heard was based on many things, only one of which was the actual speaker used. Enclosure types/sizes may have been off, power was likely not optimal, and we already know the environment was not optimal. Cut the sub some slack, Im no big W7 fan, but they definitely have the ability to move lots of air. No they dont sound like an IDQ (imo), but for their output ability, they sound pretty good. You really have to get them wanging pretty hard before their benefits over many other drivers really shines.

Try some demos from real-world systems, and real-world owners using them, before you become too sure about the abilities of the dub7's.

Ours is okay. CC just sells crappy stuff for the most part. Only thing wrong with our room is the ZX300.1 doesn't work. And our roadshop isn't located right next to or behind the sales floor.

But I hear you on things not always working correctly. Oddly enough the sound advice back in Clearwater had problems with their "boom rooms." Half the buttons didn't select the amp/speaker/sub that they were supposed to.

After I posted that I was trying to think what amp he had on the W7 and I'm pretty sure he said the PDX600.1; And yes the room is not the best condition to audition. I have heard some setups with W7's and they pounded. I just thought/expected them to be louder than they were. So, definitely lack of power and optimal conditions could be the reason.

Same here pal //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif Gotta love alpine accommodation's through best buy. If you wanna brag about your hook-ups lets see I get free shit from microsoft, I get discount on apple products(Under cost) and HUGE discounts on car audio. Im talking rockford fosgate amps, viper alarm/remote starts, etc. So yes make fun of best buy but hey I work there and my deals > yours.
