Is there such a thing as good "whitebox" buys in the car audio world?

In computers for instance there are the basics built by 3rd parties and purchased by the biguns (dell, gateway, etc) then badged.

Are there good component speakers out there for exceptional prices? Obviously not of the Rainbow caliber but blowin away the infinity's and Pioneers.

You can purchase home drivers from sites like http://www.madisound.com. You can pretty much go as expensive as you want with home drivers, but you'll need to know how to build and design good passive crossovers or use an active crossover.

Who builds the passive's for the major companies? Are these or something comparable available "whitebox"

AFAIK all companies take parts and assemble the drivers themselves.

No, a lot of component sets are other companies' drivers put together in a set with a passive. Especially when you reach the ultra high-end, with the Alpine F#1 and Genesis Absolute sets using Scanspeak Revelators. You can pay madisound to build you a custom crossover, but there's no way to simply guess crossover points when you're putting the drivers in a car. You need to experiment with different settings, which is why it's best to be able to make your own passives or get an active crossover.

Plenty of drivers way better than rainbow....Audio Technology, Scanspeak, SEAS, Accuton, Hiquphon.....all can be purchased via madisound or other distributors...and if your willing to spend good money on great drivers...take the time and do it right and go active, not passive with the drivers and use them to their full potential...
