depends what its for and speaker locations. some like 18 db because of the phase shift others like 24 and sonically alot also like 12 its all application. mine i will be messing around 72 and 36 .

Is it true a 6db rolloff (if crossed over too low) can damage a tweeter?

You could damage a tweeter with a 36db/oct slope if crossed to low //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

However, the shallower the slope, the higher (or lower, if we are talking a lowpass crossover) the crossover point needs to be. So, if you are highpassing it at 500hz with a 12db/oct slope, you'd need to raise the xover point to around 1000hz using a 6db/oct slope.
