Which of these 6.5" components for the kid's car?

My thoughts too. I heard you need 7 1/4" mounting area for the Crystals and I think they are rather deep. Trying to get info on whether they will fit in a 1995 Cavalier's door or not. That may decide it for me!
Mounting depth for the SSCS6's is 3.1 inches. Taken from Crystal's web site....

the mounting depth in cavalier doors is not much at all, i had to build i baffle to get my hd-6's to fit in:

Any idea on just exactly how much clearance you have to the rear to mount something? Wonder how deep the stock 4x6's go? As for the tweet could you have cup mounted it and place it on the A-pillar or dash? I have given the Braxials some thought too. What do you think about them? Angle the tweet where you want.

I was thinking about your install some more. According to Crutchfield's test of door space they have 2.81" mounting space to the rear. The specs on the HD-62's driver is 2.75" mounting depth:

http://www.cdtaudio.com/pdf/HD-6.pdf

Should barely clear but maybe the problem you ran into was the 6.75" diameter to the edge???

Need to get a couple more specs on these:

But don't see why with these in place the fit doesn't work and still fit behind the factory panel

those have to be wrong, or they didnt include it with the window down... and unless you want to hack away at your door frame with a carbide cutter ur gonna have to build a baffle to get the speaker in there... my baffle ending up pushing the door trim out about .75" which prevented me from putting in the christmas trees

I went by the audio shop today to see if what Crutchfield said is right and my audio guy said he thought the dimensions they gave were if you left everything as-is. If you cut the baffle out, etc... He gave me a site where it is the TRUE max you can get in. Crutchfield says my Civic is 2" where I already have a 2.54" driver and after looking behind the panel I am moving up to a 3". This site said I had 3.5" to play with which is what we actually see and agree with.
