Well, I know that the Image Dynamics CXS64 components that I have, the crossover attenuates the tweets by 3db. I thought the theory here was that since tweets are generally closer to your ear than the mids, reducing the volume will give the front stage some balance in terms of output.

My guess is that the default setting is that the tweeter is attenuated 3db. The button overrides that. Me thinks.
