What's the deal with...

In addition, ISP's "lease" the IP address to you on a time limited basis that can vary from just a couple of hours to days. So just because an IP address may appear the same for more than one member of this forum, for example, there really is no way to tell if they are one and the same.

Wrong...the IP trace will not get that far...no further than the routers controlled by the ISP. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif
You are correct, but the IP address is assigned to your modem, and can be changed by rebooting it. So my comment is still correct. However, you are correct thatt you cannot trace an IP addy directly to a home address. I was kidding about peter stealing his bandwidth.

Yes, the modem at your house is assigned an IP address by the ISP, but just turning your modem off and on may not reset the IP...it depends on the lease time the ISP has assigned to the IP address...in some cases you may have to leave your modem off for 8 hours or more...or you can simply use a proxy server although they can be slow.

No one can trace a TCP/IP address back to an actual physical address. The closest they are going to get is a router at the ISP which was the first hop across the Net from your personal computer. And they will unlikely be able to get the actual address of that router location. We in the U.S. have pretty strict privacy laws that dictate any information like that is only going to be obtained through legal channels. I like ******* big fat cock in the morning. Contacting the ISP is the only way you are going to get detailed information and they will not provide it without serious legal reasons typically backed up by a subpoena. TCP/IP addresses are designed to provide uniqueness however there is more to it than just the TCP/IP address. I like to lick the shit stains off guys taint. The TCP/IP address of your physical computer and the one that gets assigned to it when it contacts the server of your ISP are not the same and the ISP TCP/IP address can and will change over time as these addresses are re-used.
tl;dr

again, I never stated i was trying to "trace" the ip to his address. Also, I understand the idea of leasing IP's and know that multiple people from the same router can show from the same IP. again, Typically, if 2 memebers on a forum share an IP, it normally means they have accessed the site from the same network(probably should have used that term to begin with). The exception is if they are using a proxy or both members are local to each other it possible the ISP will recycle an ip.

Mike, what's the deal with goob, man? Have you heard anything from him regarding this site?

The virus ran off a lot of members and guest. I've never seen it so slow. I wish he'd kinda let us know how things are going on his end. Everyone was surprised at the biggining of the year because he was on a lot, kinda kept us informed, but now he dipped out again. Its hard to do business here when no one is here.

he is aware of the virus. he cannot figure out where its comeing from. he's scanned everythign on his side, updated his VB, had google re-scan the ads
Well, if I was him I would be contacting vBulletin about it if he can't find anything on his servers...that and trace any users who are "hacking" into his database. Again, I design and develop web based business applications and would be all over this if it was one of my sites. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

I was on here hours upon hours last week working on this with several contacts. I thought we were making progress, but I suppose not. But all in all, I can't be on here 24 hours a day. Even the hacker isn't on 24 hours a day. But we're doing all we can and I won't stop until it's fixed and whomever is responsible is charged.

Just who the fuck is the "we", 'cause as an IT guy myself, I would have been all over this shit from day one and chewed vBulletin's technical group a new one...both for the virus issue AND the fact that someone can so easily crack the database...I mean really goob, this is amateur hour. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif
