Okay, i can either keep my explorer with 143k miles on it, or sell the explorer and use it as a down payment, and buy a new vehicle with around $150 a month payments on it.

Im 18, and money isnt a HUGE issue. I make about $500 a month, sometimes more sometimes less. And i have enough saved up to get me through my first year or two of college already.

Need to know before i put my new system into a vehicle! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

If i buy a new vehicle, it would probably be an extended cab/quad cab pickup, or another SUV

500 a month, wont get you anything where im at... i spend more than that on cigarettes, gas, and food a month... ftl.... if i was you though, stick with the old car, your young you'll go through plenty of cars in your life.

I recently had a similar situation to deal with. I had a 92' Civic LX with 220k miles on it, and it was in need of some moderate body/interior work with some rust, dents, and a smelly, mil-dewy interior with some pretty bad cigarette burns. I opted to buy an 03' Civic EX 5spd. Keep in mind that in all actuality, I probably could have gotten 300k from my Civic if I would have been willing to live with an old, rusty smelly vehicle for another year or 2. Just got to the point where I needed the gurantee of reliable transportation. Honda or not, the possibility was real that the engine could go at anytime, and I didnt want to be stuck with no ride, as my life pretty much depends on it right now. The cost however is great. I make about $1200 a month after taxes, and am thinking of moving in with a buddy, who with rent and internet/cable etc will come to about $500 a month. Add in a 3 year car loan payment at $330 a month, and the fact my insurance doubled due to full coverage ($650 every 6 months) and it's easy to see how it's going to be slim pick'ins. I'm VERY lucky to have grandparents that are willing to cover my school costs, and parents that pay about half my car insurance. Bottom line is that if your Explorer is in nice shape, and well maintained, you should try to get every bit of 200k out of it. With a V6's/V8 your probably not going to get the insane mileage out of the bigger engine like you would in a 4cyl, but considering your income level, I would sit on your current ride for the time being. Once your into school, and more comfortable with your situation, your be more inclined to make smarter decisions regarding your options.

I would have to just say Financially I would advise staying with your current set of wheels and just hold off, but I can feel you on wanting a new car/truck.

perhaps wait a little longer save some more $ and do it in the future.

College is more expensive than you will ever think. There are things that occur all the time that you need money laying around for. SO, keep your old car and your money and get ready to burn the most money ever, in college....

Yeah my explorer is in pretty decent condition. check engine light is on due to bad oxygen sensor, which i will fix, ****** is at 143k miles, and stuffs rattled loose //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif . My concern is if i go to my desired college, i will be making a 250 mile one-way trip over a mountain pass to get home. dont want my ****** blowing up there hehe.
