What wire size to wire sub..

Overkill!

12ga would would work with 2500w RMS.

If it fits your amp/subs it'd work fine... it's just overkill.

Shoudl've known.. the guy at the audio shop said for the SQL subs they have (Diamond D9's, W7 and the upper tier Kicker) they run 8 gauge... live and learn.

buy reducers reduce the wire down from 8 - 12 or get thinner wire. Wire is so freaking cheap your amp and speakers on the other hand are not.

And 8awg is way overkill, 16 awg is fine.

How much wire are we talking about here? If it's only a couple of feet, then toss it and get some reasonable size wire. As mentioned, 16 guage is fine.
