Teen Dies, Others Injured in Staten Island Crash
NEW YORK -- A 17-year-old girl is dead, a 16-year-old boy is in critical condition and another five were injured in what police believe was a drag-racing accident on Staten Island.
One of the cars had a nitrous oxide tank hidden in its trunk, police said.
Michelle Arout of Annadale, a student at Tottenville High School, was pronounced dead shortly after 1 a.m. today in Staten Island University Hospital.
The crash occurred at about 9 p.m. on a stretch of Veterans Road West between Englewood Avenue near the West Shore Motor Lodge and Tyrellan Avenue by the Charleston Retail Center.
She was a backseat passenger in a black Honda Accord that collided with a gray Ford Mustang GT and split in half, according to authorities.
Police believe the two vehicles had been speeding along Veterans Road West when their drivers lost control and struck one another.
The Ford, which had the nitrous oxide tank used to boost horsepower hidden in the trunk, swerved left across the divider and slammed into a fence separating Veterans Road West from the West Shore Expressway.
