Those Red states that you call "welfare states" are such because of the Democratic population in those Red states that are using more assistance than anyone else in that state causing that Republican state to get more than it gives, in your words, to the government. Like I said, assigning a color to the state is misleading as to who is using the most assistance just because that state votes Red. Ignorant people will look at this metric and say Republicans get more assistance which is false. It should be clarified that Republican states get more assistance because of their Democratic populations.

You're misinterpreting the data. The data shows federal tax dollars flow blue states to red states. It doesn't show that it's SNAP or SSI or Medicaid, etc. For all we know Mississippi is building 6 lane highways and bridges to nowhere with the money. Obviously some of this cash flow would be in the form of assistance programs. In that case, we don't know if those receiving the assistance are red or blue. You're free to assume they're more likely to be Dems, OTOH, isn't there a built in assumption that they would GOPsters based on the fact that live in very red states?
