You must be going back a long while.
Because the 'receiver' which is typically an amplifier, tuner, & pre-amplifier all in one has been around for a long time.

Yes, separates were still fairly popular in the 70s and even 80s in the mainstream. But for the most part, receivers started to become the norm...
