What is the deal with dual voice coil subs?

The only thing standing in my way of finally having a complete system is the addition of a subwoofer in my car's audio system. I'm looking at Boston Acoustic subs (and I probably won't be swayed - my front components, and rear deck are Boston), and I see for the exact same price on every tier, is a single, or a dual voice coil sub. Whether it be the $199, $179, or $119 tier, you can go with a single or dual voice coil.

How is one to decide? What is the benefit? I plan on having this sub be the only sub in the car.

And when this question finally gets sorted out, and I add another amp to my car (to power the sub), does the new amps battery fuse under the hood get daisy chained with the existing amp (the amp that powers my front components) battery fuse, or is the original replaced for a fuse rated high enough to compensate for having two amps?

It depends on what amp you have and what load you want to put on it.

Say you have a 1000 watt amp @ 1 ohm, you want to get a sub that will wire to 1 ohm so you can get full potential of the amp, therefore getting a DUAL 2 subwoofer.

The power wire from the battery is fused for protection of that wire. Just be higher then total amp fuse ratings.

The coil set ups are for wiring configurations. Depending on what power you want from your amp at a certain Ohm. So pick accordingly.

SVC vs DVC is to make it so one sub can be wired for different impedances.

a DVC 4 can be wired to 2 or 8

DVC 2 can be wired to 1 or 4

2 DVC 2's can be wired to 0.5, 2, 8

2 DVC 4's can be wired to 1, 4, 16

Well if it's all about wiring and matching it up with an amp, this subwoofer project starts with nothing. I want to buy a sub, and an amp for that sub, whatever's needed to buy the best sub for my money.

Does this make sense? I'm going into it just wanting the best, but am starting from scratch on just the subwoofer addition.

The Boston sub I want comes in two versions, a single, or a dual. But both cost the same and have the same listed specs of:

# 12" 4-ohm subwoofer

# copolymer woofer cone with foam surround

# RadialVent cooling for increased power handling

# power range: 75-300 watts RMS

# frequency response: 20-350 Hz

# sensitivity: 89.6 dB

# mounting depth: 7-1/16"

# sealed box volume: 1.00 cu. ft.

# ported box volume: 2.00 cu. ft.

So again, if you're going into this with nothing but want "the best possible," do you get the single or dual voice coil version? Same everything but SVC versus DVC? Getting redundant yet? Do dual voice coils sound better with one voice coil per channel on a 2-channel amp or anything? What do I buy?

Dosent matter just as long as it matches what your amp does at that resistance... So if you pick a amp that does 500 watts @ 4ohms then you can get a SVC 4ohm sub OR a DVC 2ohm sub

DVC and SVC make it possible to wire different loads for a various amount of subs

as far as performanve goes...a dvc and svc sub with all specs the same will sound exxactly the same

one is not better than the other

I have two boston G2s and im getting two more

theyre all DVC b.c i want to wire them at 2 ohms in order for my amp to put out the maximum power that the subs can take

OK well if I get the DVC version of this particular Boston G2 sub, what kind of amp am I supposed to match it up with as far as 2-channel or mono amp? If it was a 2-channel amp, you don't bridge it do you - don't you use one coil per channel on the amp or am I wrong?

Because for my system, I could get away with just one sub (not a ghetto blaster), and I'd rather not spend $350 just on the subs. Also, with my luck, getting two G5's (or two of anything for that matter) would end up being the reason my car would develop severe rattling, which with my obsessive brain, would send me deep into yet another car research project and savings plan on sound deadening. First it was the deck, then rear deck, then the components, and now as you can see the sub. I can't take much more of this research and install stuff. I am really hoping once I get this sub in, I'll forget what the word "forum" means. No offense to anyone here, but my car's sound system has been a 2-year project thus far (limited available funds + research up the ***).
