1)What is "summing" in layman's term?

I have a jl cleansweep CL441dsp, and there is this item called CL-SSI, which can be connected to the cleansweep to enable the summing capability.

2) Is the summing for tuning?

3) A shop told me that the JL Cleansweep is POS and you can't tune it.... and that i should get a 3SIXTY. They told me they can sell and install the 3Sixty to me for $300 flat. good idea or no?

so guys, what are ya inputs? (please no pointless comments like your stupid, unless your going to educate me)

Actually I do not know so I would be interested in this one as well.

From what I am reading it has to do with factory systems with integrated crossovers in the head unit which filter the signal to seperate factory tweeters, mids and/or subs. You run these filtered outputs to the input of the summing unit and it converts them to two sets of fullrange rca outputs.

At least that's what I think it does from reading JL's site. Not sure how it would work but it's pretty cool if it does.

Exactly what it sounds like.

Taking more than one audio signal and "summing" (combining) them into a single audio signal.

2) Is the summing for tuning?
This page pretty much explains exactly what it's for:

Depends on your specific needs.

If all you want and/or need is something to correct the default OEM audio adjustments then no, I think it's more "product" (more headaches, a lot of features you won't understand how to properly use, etc) than you need.

If you are wanting to maximize your audio system and want the ability to have more in-depth adjustments....then it's something to investigate. Just be aware that you need to have a PDA or computer to adjust the settings in the 3sixty. It's not a simply plug-and-play device like the Cleansweep is. And frankly, not everyone needs all of the features the 3sixty offers.

The shop I get all my work done has been nothing but please, and said there isn't a product out there that compares to it. I have only heard tyhe difference once with and without one, but with the JL Cleansweep, and it does make the world of difference! As far as not being able to tune it????? I doubt JL would come out with a product that can't be tuned. Sounds more to me like THEY can't tune it.

I agree with squeak. Unless you are wanting a lot more flexibility and actually have a PDA, RTA program and equipment at hand...I wouldn't really go with the 3sixty. But it's your money, we can only give you our opinions.

I've heard "summing" reffered to as what we know as linking amps. Basically 2 amps are combined to create twice the power. I dont know if this is reffereing to the same thing or not.
You are talking about strapping amps together, not 'summing' them.

Generally in audio, 'summing' means to combine the left and right channels to create a mono channel (for subs, center channel, etc).

There's no tuning with the Cleansweep.

It takes the factory audio signal and corrects it back to a "flat" signal.

That's it.

No user-adjustable crossovers, no user-adjustable EQ, no time delay, etc.
