used mostly for vented boxes to protect the woofer from excessive excursion below the box tuning.

yeah tyically the formal thing to do is set it at box tuning.

yes, the 1000/1's can be set up for a master/slave combo.

the boxes are tune at 30 hz. and yes i have 3 jl 1000's on 2 dimond d9 12's. i tried 1 amp on each sub it hit but when i slaved the 2 amps on 1 sub it really came alive so i put one more on them

hmm, I would think that two 1000/1's would be enough, never really heard of a 3 amp two sub combo.
