I had an eXcelon that would "cut out" at times and send crazy signals through the speakers. Turned out to be the plug that goes into the HU. It was too heavy and didn't stay plugged in tightly. I used a small wood shim to wedge it tightly into place and it solved the problem...

True, DC does not have a alternating freq like AC. Sounds more like a short on the board in the head unit or a burnt or shorted trace causing signal interference.
