Here is a recent link on this very subject. Remember that pennies are an alloy and are composed of other metals than just copper (e.g. Zinc).

So there is a strong arguement to discontinue the penny (similar to the Euro system) and only keep the nickel. The other side of the arguement says that markets are more efficient and in that the penny provide better liqudiity for small ticket items. You will also have a rounding problem on things like sales tax. So if you're total is $1.62 does the business round up or down and then who keeps the marginal difference (state,local, fed government or business).
