What exactly is overrated?

Is it when an amp is rated at 14.4v and therefore its overrated because a car never puts out 14.4v(usually) or is it because the they dont do what they say at 14.4v

for example:i have a hifonics 1208d thats supposed to put out 900 rms at 2 ohms.. rated at 14.4v.. i have heard hifonics is overrated.. doesnt that mean its only putting out 600-700 at 14.4v?

yes, essentially that is what people mean.

Although in some cases amps are ovveratted that much, there is a lot more too it. Im sure that amp would see rated power with the correct electrical behind it. Any amp isnt going to put out rated power without a strong electrical.

14.4v ratings dont help the situation either, if you get a voltage drop, your wattage drops.

That, and you will never run your amp at a full 900RMS on music anyways.

your probably getting 600w @ 2 ohms. most people's voltage doesnt stay at 14.4 at full tilt.

yes that is what it means...its prolly not far off but ya i heard they were underrated also..but ive heard a few systems with hif amps and they were pretty loud..just depends on ur setup

im assuming u meant overrated but ya my setup is pretty loud but id like to get an amp that puts out its true rating to get even louder
