what does a cap actually do?

most useful thing a cap does is filter out AC riple in your electrical system from enterring the amp

in theory its supposed to store power so when you amp draws more current it can supply that extra power instantly until the bat has time to to kick in and do it. doesnt really work though unless you get into the 100+ farad cap range. most of em also have nice little voltage readouts on em too, those are always useful

put the money else where. I am not saying if they work or not but your better off trying to buy a High Output alternator, Additional Battery or Big Three (if you dont know what it is search or there is a sticky explaining it) with bigger wire. Much better options then spending a bill on a cap

getting 1/0 gauge wire for the big 3 is less expensive than most caps, so i would do that first.
