What bookshelf speaks?

hmm canadian speaks...interesting, i'll have to check out some local dealers...

i used to be a proud owner of mackie industrial monitors and tannoy speaks (used mostly for turntables) and quite honestly, that's the type of quality i'm looking into right now (even though i'm broke as all hell). i honestly can't afford anything from either manufacturer though...

i'm starting to boil things down to some reasonable options, i want some opinions and possibly even first-hand experiences (though i doubt i'll get any)..

First up is a pair of behringer truth b2031P's...

b2031P_250.jpg

these are the cheapest of the pairs i'm considering...they go for 160 shipped and sport a 8.75" mid...PLEASE no posts about some review there was on the active version of these, i'm interested in passive only..

next alesis monitor one mkIIs..

these are selling for 200 shipped... i've read that these tend to be bass-heavy...

i've also been looking at some samson resolv 65 monitors...

these seem to be most comparable to the alesis set but what do i know (also 200 shipped for the pair)..

next is a pair of event 20/20 v2 monitors...

these are between 260~300 shipped and rock an 8" mid...again, please no comments about the online review of these and the behringers as they were both active monitors...

and lastly, some good ol' jbl's:

these cost 300 a pair, definitely the most i'm willing to spend. these too rock an 8" mid. i've also read a few positive reviews on these...

again i'm only looking for a passive set... eldorado is still trying to convince me to go the artiber route and build enclosures...we'll see... give me opinions!!!

i think i might disregard any pair that has a big mid like 8"

and what'd i say like 3 times already about commenting on active setups...it's like comparing apples to oranges my friend even though theyre the same **** speaker

Those mini-monitor speakers (what I call them) all usually sound weak. I have never heard one that I liked. They are usually ok components with cheap parts with a shinny finish. Where I have seen them used successfully is in SMALL home studios where basic mastering takes place and they want something that sounds better than the "computer" speaker. But, now a lot of reference grade companies that are making a cheaper line system that sound very good.

You can find some Rega R1’s for around $350 if you look hard, and I know that is above the budget but I don’t think you would reget getting them.

Also, if you look around online or at local dealers you can get some DM601 S2 or S2’s for $330 or less check ebay and froogle. I own a pair of the DM601 S3 speakers and love them. Also, the DM 303’s you can find even cheaper. Also, if you wanted to go the DIY way, the Arbitor set from AA is pretty good also. I actually have a set in production using the AA parts not...

DM601 S3

*$225x2, but I got mine for $309

DM303

https://www.hometheaterstore.com/store/product.php?productid=1797

*$150x2, but dealers will let their floor models go a lot cheaper....

I have heard active and passive, usually the active do sound better because of the processing that compensates for the weaknesses in the speaker design. But, for active you are looking at a lot more money. The only "studio monitor" mini-monitors I have heard that I really liked were the higher end JBL and the ADAM audio, but you are looking at 2k or more for one of these setups....

x2, Those Atoms are a smokin' deal. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/yumyum.gif.0556df42231b304b9c995aefd13928a8.gif
Yep, I think the Atom's are the most accurate speaker at this price point.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/bowdown.gif.b85b23b82970bd22fb6b549c3392f016.gif
