Not true. Out of about 30 test drives in my lifetime the salesman has ridden with me probably 5 times.

Depends on the car. If you go in trying to test drive a new corvette dressing all sharp and telling them you are going to put a 20k down payment on the car, even then they will only let you sit inside and rev it....unless you have your parents with you. The value of the car does make a difference. I found a way to get around this. Go to carmax. I was gonna drive a Porsche Carrera but I had already driven the M3 that same day.
Basically just tell them you are interested in the car and aren't set on a vehicle yet, you are still trying to decide but the car you wish to test drive is one of the ones on your list.

I had a friend back in high school (we were all about 16 at the time) who put on a suit with his friend, walked into a Ford dealership and told them that his uncle was a wealthy lawyer who was going to buy him a car for his birthday, and they proceeded to drive the hell out of a fully loaded Shelby Mustang (the salesperson didn't mind as he figured he was going to make a sale //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif)

The first rule of test driving a car is you NEVER talk about test driving the car!!

On a serious note it depends on the dealer, I used to go test drive cars when I was bored on weekends and 90% of the time they would let me go alone..

For some reason now I am 30 (Was 16-18 then) they always seem to come with me. Probably due to the fact when they used to let me go alone and got sick of the cars being beat to shit. I took a few mustangs and an iroc and went and did donuts and just beat the shit out of them for about 30 minutes and once took an explorer 4 wheeling out by the power lines and returned it covered in mud. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

Even if you are 16 thought they should let you drive it but will probably come with you.

One dealership let my mom take home a brand new Xterra to try it out and see if my Dad would like it. They just said to return the next day in the morning. I was surprised. Of course they had a copy of her drivers license and insurance though.

i'm always test driving vehicles...when i drive up in the Saleen the sales people just drool...lol its fun screwing with the sales people...they have nothing better to do anyway...

I'm gonna take my mom's new acura tl type S, say i just inherited a lot of money and go try to test drive a used Z06. That should be fun.

when my brother was 18 i went with him and we test drove a new impala. all they asked for was a copy of his license.
