The Honda Fit is only 12K brand new. I test drove one and it was a great ride. Tons of mods are becoming available for it also

get a car that an insurance will classify as a sedan or hatchback. You could get a used BMW for about 10-12k. Like an '00-'01 3-series, maybe even newer.

Or if you want something you can work on but that will be potentially fast, get a Contour SVT. Somebody mentioned an SVT Focus, and that would be good too. There are lost of cars you can snag for 10k, just pick up a local car sales magazine and start looking
