- What modern engine swap options are there?- How difficult are most body mods like heater channel replacement, fenders, etc?
- Are the suspension bushings difficult to replace? I've replaced struts and springs before, but I assume bushings are one of those things that are overlooked often.

i think the only modern engine swaps i've seen are subaru swaps. swaps are more work than necessary. you can get the old engines in so many sizes that modern swaps are more of like a "can i do it" kind of thing. a lot of people swap old porsche engines though.
fenders are just as easy as any fender replacement. unhook headlights/taillights, get underneath find the bolts, take fender off.
i haven't had to replace my heater channels, but from what i've skimmed on samba and vwvortex, it involves cutting, welding, removing body parts and such. but since you're looking to buy a car, obviously check to make sure both heater channels, floor pans, battery tray and all the common spots like those are rust free.
when i redid my suspension, i just helped my mechanic do it so basically i was doing what he told me, and we had any tools necessary, and it all went smoothly.
chick magnet? it's not like i pull girls because of my car, but you'd be suprised at how many people actually do like it. for all the hate i seem to get on forums like this and offtopic, it's rare that i go somewhere busy and don't get compliments on it. and i'm in the middle of bodywork so my car looks like shit. but the most common thing that comes out of a girls mouth when she sees my car is "oh my god i love your car it's so cute" so as long as you're not one of those guys that has the "my car needs to be badass" mentality, then you'll like the attention it gets.
