Volt Question

Hey guys,

I just tested my car's Battery out with my bros voltmeter. When off my car is around 12volts. When idle, it's at 14.2 volts. Does this mean i have a 14 volt alternaor or what?

that's the way most vehicles are. The alternator must put out more voltage than the battery in order to charge it.

i don't get it, so my alternator puts out 2 volts? since when my car is off the battery is at 12volts. when it's on it's at 14.

my batt tests at 12.5v off and 13.8on, so my alt puts out 13.8v...

The battery's float voltage is 12VDC.

The alternator should provide somewhere above 14VDC in order to keep it charged.

Ok so my alt is putting about 14.2 running, this should be sufficient to provide for my system?

I have a hifonics 1605d amp... would i need a capacitor?
