Volt meters

Can someone explain some stuff about volt meters to me?

I have a couple questions but I might have it all misunderstood anyways

Talking about like what dcole18 has. (I'm sure a lot of people have it but this is just to clarify, and if there is a more proper term TELL ME)

Is the power wire installed on the power output on the alternator or positive terminal on the battery?

And can the ground just be a good ground/body ground or would it be better to go directly to battery ground?

It's wired in parallel to the circuit...I'd tap off to wherever is closest to reduce voltage drop to the meter...

Ok, I already knew that it'd be in parallel, so I guess it'd be after the battery.
