I'm doing a presentation on alternative media, more specifically, message forums.

The question I have for you is: What do you like and dislike about message forums?

Exceptionally intelligent/funny/noteworthy/retarded answers will be included in a slideshow.

I'll start.

I like emoticons: //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif

Likes: Talking to people that I would have never gotten to know because I simply can't afford to travel all over the country.

Dislikes: People that start talking about issues that they know nothing about. 99% of what people say on forums is "heresay".

I also think the emergence of various keyboard ninjas and internet warriors that roam the forums is pretty hilarious.

A forum is a place for groups of people to "congregate" haha, if that can be done electronically and a vast array of information can be found via a forum.

I would know next to nothing about CA if it weren't for this and other forums.

It also adds the ability to ask questions on more elaborate things, rather than just having to settle for what the textbook tells you (i.e Loudspeaker Design Cookbook.) Although that book is chock full of information people here can basically baby people thru the process.

If you encounter a problem you can be walked through the troubleshooting process, and what to do after the problem is identified.

It also opens a trading/buying/selling community for people, although scammers are out there.

Dislikes

Sifting thru the junk to get a real post

Scammers

Know it alls

Audiobahn questions

Real threads getting no hits, and nonsensical threads getting all the attention

The list goes on and on though bro

I consider a forum where you learn stuff(all the stickies and more) from educated people, ask for help, advice...learn new stuff, learn updates or some news of "internet compagnies", also the background of compagnies , the good and the bad, sell stuff, buy stuff...

also, its fun for killing some time...

I like being surrounded by people who have a common interest and enjoy sharing knowledge with one another. The thing I dislike about them is that some people are rude and harass others constantly.

I like that you get to learn about new products that you would have only accidentally come across on the net.

I like that people give reviews and you can watch movies and see pictures of others ideas.

I don't like that fact that lots of people have to go and bash others to make themselves sound smart.

Amen to that. Makes me laugh though, like people who know eachother outside of the forum have huge threads helping one another, instead of calling, or going to eachothers houses, but people on here w/o the local knowledge who post threads get left behind.

I hate everybody who cannot use "you're", "your", "then", "than", "they're", "there", and "their" correctly. I also hate the use of "ur" or "u" or any other short hand form of words. I cannot understand how people don't honestly know the difference between these words and I hate how people defend this syntax genocide by saying they're lazy. Laziness does NOT affect your ability to choose which form of the said words to use. THAT is what I hate most about message boards. I also hate people who cannot use proper punctuation in their posts. You know it's sad when people who don't speak English as their native language can type better than "adults" on these forums.

I can understand typos and people not being able to spell words correctly, but the misuse of words I learned how to use when I was 7 years old is just ridiculous.

Likes: Pretty much the same that everyone else has stated. Getting to learn about products, getting help from people, meeting/talking to people that I never would have, feedback on products, opinions, the list goes on.

Dislikes: The people who try to be smartasses. Replies to threads that say "search.." yea sure the threads about caps and things you see constantly is understandable but other things its a bit ridiculious. The whole FTL/FTW thing, shortening words and adding a Y to the end (all forums I look at) "alty" for example. This makes you seem more like a kid than anything alt. would be more suitable? Lastly the people who bash the people with lower end stuff. Sure if a kid comes on here thinkin his duals will blow anything out of the water he deserves it but on the other hand if the person really needs some help it seems like everyone always resorts to "sell it and get something else" for all you know the person might not have the money.
