so how loud was this compared to your setup in your explorer with the herc and 2 15's?

very comparable actually. As to loudness, they are pretty much equal, but the avalanche can handle the bass a lot more in relation to structure. On the lows in the explorer, even with 200sq ft of deadener, it rattled like a tin can. In the avalanche, with 150sq ft deadener and 7 yards ensolite, the only rattles i get now are the rear window (which will be fixed next time i go home), and my trim pieces inside due to me being too lazy to replace broken clips.
