Video Chat / Webcams

I was wondering if anyone here had any information on webcams or video chatting with people. My GF and I go to school about 5 hours apart, and we would love to be able to see each other and talk to each other. I first noticed you could do this on certain mac computers.

She has windows vista on her computer, and I have Xp on mine. So what do I need to buy in order to be able to see and talk to someone over the internet? neither of us have a microphone now. Also, can I do it through AIM? Or do I have to buy some special service to do it? I want the quality to be as good as possible, but I don't want to have to spend like $300 to do it either.

Any information would be great. I just dont know anything about these types of things.

I've used MSN Messenger and a cheap Logitech webcam with headset for YEARS. I've been all over the world and whenever I have a broadband connection, I have little trouble with MSN. It's simple and quick, requires no extraneous software and doesn't hog alot of system resources, either.

yahoo messenger and windows messenger are both good. You can do voice and cam with both.

Pretty much what everyone uses.

Also,

http://www.skype.com Its like a phone on your computer, with webcam.

Thanks people.

Now I just have to pick one out. I have been reading reviews for about 2 hours now, and for every great review I read on a product, I find one terrible review. I haven't found a single camera yet that seems to work perfectly, and have solid resolution and sound.

So if anyone has any ideas let me know.

I usually bought the cheapest ones. No matter how much you spend all webcams dont seem to last long. JUst buy a $5 mic and a $10-12 webcam from walmart or target. The mic will last forever.

good call. you need to be able to deliver the money shot in high resolution and fidelity, my french friend.

The Logitech QuickCam Fusion is probably going to be the best you'll find within a reasonable price range. I've used a ton of different webcams and that one is good in all areas and you can get it for under $100 ...
BTW, $10 webcams look like shit and $5 microphones sound like shit ...
All sound and look pretty much the same to me. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/imdaman.gif.bc6c552e19aa4ad8c47461144f40eb1a.gif never used one that cost more than $60, that one looked the same too. But I dont and didnt use them enough to care either.

The Fusion was my number one choice before I read about all the software problems they were having with them. I read some horror stories about them killing peoples computers, and getting the "blue screen of death". I am not sure if the problem was fixed, but if I knew that camera could be easily installed, and wouldn't kill my computer or my girlfriends, I would go out and buy two of them now. It sounds like they are great when they work correctly.
